Hippies Use Back Door

At the beginning of the summer, the owner and landlord of Hazel House at 4703 sent out an email to the tenants, notifying us that she would be giving the house to her son at the end of August. So we all had to move. And fast.

It was, needless to say, a shock–just as we were settling into a rhythm with new housemates and a new summer, the rug was pulled out from under us. The summer has been chaotic and unsettling and Hazel House, the collective, is no more.

I pulled out some audio that I had recorded with an earlier iteration of the house last year and polished it off for this commemorative post. What follows are some brief audio clips from housemates reflecting on what they valued about the house, and what the experience has given them.

While everyone appreciated the space itself, and the opportunity to save some money while living outside of the dominant culture, most people spoke of what the house has provided for them as growing young adults.
